Great work, fun place, but too much business for them to handle.
Cremer's is really the only place you'll hear recommended for instrument repair around here, so when my son's bass developed a buzzing, I took it there. You can't help but love the place. It's a tiny shop jammed full gear, mostly used. In short, the kind of place that may not be around much longer. Rick said the bass needed a new nut and some neck adjustments. It was a minor repair, so I was surprised when he said we would need to wait four weeks and then leave it for close to a week! Nevertheless, it was still playable, so we brought it in on a Monday four weeks later - where we put it on the literal mountain of other stuff being dropped off. When we went to pick it up on Saturday, they initially had trouble finding it and then admitted they had simply *forgotten* to fix it. They weren't particularly apologetic, explaining it had not "gotten on the calendar", as if this wasn't their fault. We were told it would be done Wednesday - probably.
When we came in Wednesday, finding it was again a challenge, but it was in fact fixed. He took the time to explain what he did and it works perfectly now. He's clearly an artist who takes his work very seriously. On the other hand, it took five and a half weeks for a very minor repair.
The bottom line is that because of his good reputation, business has grown beyond the point where he can handle it all personally, and he shows no sign of expanding to streamline the operation. If I have a serious repair, I'll probably still take it there, but if I ever have another simple fix, I'd probably check out someplace else.
I was so pleased with the work Ricky Cremer did on one of my vintage guitars. He was recommended to me from an acquaintance. I actually traveled from St Louis to have Ricky repair my guitar. The neck had been fractured and the work Ricky did on my guitar was fantastic......
I've been bringing all of my basses to Rick for 30 years, and everything he's ever done for me has been top-notch work with particular attention to detail. The shop is actually a fun place to browse- there's lots of vintage and used equipment to see. I feel fortunate to have someone with his expertise within driving distance. There are other repair shops closer to me, but they're not not nearly as good or knowledgeable.
